Poetry at Ripon Library

On 8th October young poet Cara Brennan will be at the National Poetry Day at Ripon Library.

The young poet is holding a poetry reading of her own work and workshop for young children to encourage literacy. The workshop, aimed at 7-11 year old, will be based around the theme of “Games” which is in correspondence with the 2012 Olympic Games which will be held in London.

The Workshop will take place in the library meeting room on Saturday 8th October, 11am – 12.30pm, with booking being essential and with a limited number of places. Cara herself will then begin with a reading of her own poems in the library reference section between 1.15pm and 1.30pm, where upon this event is free of charge.

County Councillor, Chris Metcalfe. North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Library Services commented he was “delighted that Ripon Library is able to welcome a young literary talent like Cara Brennan who can help to enthuse our local children about poetry and word play.”

Being an English Literature graduate from Newcastle University, Cara has had her poetry published in Pomegranate, The Cadaverine, and The Beat, as well as being commended in the 2009 Aesthetica Works Competition. In 2010, Cara also read her poetry at the Ilkley and Morley Literature Festivals and she is currently in a Writing Squad Five who are working with Simon Armitage on the Stanza Stones Project.

Cara is also a member of NAWE – The National Association of Writers in Education, the one organisation supporting the development of creative writing in all genres and in all education and community settings throughout the UK.
